Black mold is the name people give to dark green or black growth on walls, ceilings and framing. Mold Removal Cleveland removes it from homes in Cleveland, Ohio, and treats it the same way as any other mold: find the moisture, contain the area, take the growth out and dry everything. This page covers what dark mold means, what is done about it and what is not worth doing.

What’s included in Black Mold Removal

  • Inspection of the dark growth and the materials under it.
  • Sealed containment and air filtration around the work area.
  • Protective gear for the crew for the whole of the removal.
  • Cutting out and bagging of heavily affected drywall, insulation and trim.
  • Cleaning of framing and hard surfaces that can be saved.
  • Drying with fans and dehumidifiers.
  • A written note on where the water came from.

Dark color does not rank the risk

Dark growth looks alarming, and it is natural to ask whether it is the dangerous kind. The CDC page on mold does not discuss black mold in its text, and it says the health effects of mold differ from person to person and can be none at all. People with asthma or mold allergies may react strongly, and people with weak immune systems or chronic lung disease may develop lung infections.

The practical point from the same page is that no matter what type of mold is present, it has to be removed. Color cannot be used to decide whether to act.

Many things look like black mold: soot, dirt, old water stains and mildew on a damp surface. Photos sent with an enquiry help, but the growth is judged on site.

Questions to ask any mold contractor

Ask how the work area will be contained, what happens to the air during removal and how the moisture source will be handled. Ask for the scope of work in writing before anything starts. A contractor who offers to spray and walk away, or who promises the mold will never return without mentioning the water, is leaving out the main point.

Questions about your specific situation? Call (216) 405-2515 and ask.

From dark patch to dry, clean framing

Stopping the spread first

Before anything is touched, the room is closed off and the air handling is turned off. Scraping dark growth without containment is how spores end up in the next room.

Working out what is wet

A moisture meter shows whether the wall or ceiling is still damp. If it is, the source has to be found, whether that is a pipe, a roof leak or condensation.

Cutting out what cannot be saved

Soft materials with heavy growth are removed in sections and bagged on the spot. Wood framing is cleaned and left to dry.

Clearing the air and checking

Air scrubbers run while the work finishes. The crew goes over the surfaces again before the barriers come down. ANSI/IICRC S520 sets the standard for this work, and the crew follows it.

What not to do with dark mold

The EPA guide to mold cleanup in your home says not to paint or caulk over moldy surfaces. A coat of paint hides the stain and leaves the growth underneath. Spraying a product on the surface without scrubbing and drying does the same. If the growth covers more than about 10 square feet, the EPA points to professional guidance instead of home cleanup.

Not sure which option fits your situation? Call (216) 405-2515 and talk it through with a contractor.

Dark mold in other rooms

Mold shows up in different parts of a home, and each has its own page:

Black mold removal across the wider area

Work is carried out in Cleveland and across Cuyahoga County. Call to check that a particular address is covered. The county takes in Shaker Heights, where about 75 percent of the city is on the National Register of Historic Places. In Euclid, the city says its permitted combined sewer overflows discharge into Lake Erie, with one exception that goes to Euclid Creek. Where the crew works is set out on the service area page.

Black Mold Removal Cleveland: questions and answers

What does black mold look like?

It shows as dark green or black spots or patches, often with a musty smell, on walls, ceilings, wood and grout. Several non-mold things look the same, so a site visit is the reliable way to tell.

What not to spray on mold?

Avoid spraying anything over mold and leaving it. The EPA says not to paint or caulk moldy surfaces, and the growth has to be scrubbed off hard surfaces and dried. Do not run the heating and cooling system if mold may be in it.

Is black mold more dangerous than other mold?

The CDC says health effects vary from person to person and that any type of mold needs to be removed. People with asthma, allergies or weakened immune systems should be more careful.
